Matthew Hilyard

My work translates the history of Abstraction into a personal idiom that includes design, gesture, and shape. The tradition and convention of abstract paintings are the vehicle by which I re-inscribe my connection to the world.

It's a process by trial and error, based on the belief that painting can be both evocative and straightforward, simultaneously conjuring up the world beyond it's edges , while appearing to tell nothing more than the story of it's making.

So it is with my artistic development and connection to abstract painters of the past. I am shaped and guided by those that came before me Giving me a solid foundation to build from.

My relationship with these past icons has allowed me to grow and shape my own path.

Born and raised in Wichita, Ks. I reside and maintain my studio in Andover Kansas.

My work has been included in numerous Local, National and International juried exhibitions.
